Recently there have been many games out offering more than just the game itself. Dubbed as “collector’s editions” they offer the consumer a few extras to justify the high price tag they’re often set at.
My question is are they totally worth the price of admission? Sure, if you’re a huge fan of a certain game it’s nice that to have a bonus such as a making of DVD or an art book, but $200 is a lot of money to spend on one game even with the extras.
The Street Fighter IV Collector’s Edition was a huge rip-off to anyone who bought it for the full RRP of $200. On paper it seemed like a good bargain as it came with the game, a mini strategy guide, a Blu-ray movie, two figurines and packaged in a cardboard box like a diorama. What they didn’t mention was that the figurines were only 3 inches tall and were made of cheap plastic – plus they were imposable. The Blu-ray movie looked more like a DVD in terms of picture quality and the movie itself lacked any action and the mini strategy guide was only eight pages long.
Last year’s release of Smackdown vs Raw 2009 also had a less-than-stellar Collector’s Edition. Although it had a RRP of $140 it was still a bit of a rip-off. All it came with is a Blu-ray disc and yet another cheap mould of plastic – this time a wrestling ring. Again, the content on the Blu-ray isn’t something worth viewing more than once. The making of is only 20 minutes long as the matches featured here aren’t that great either.
These are the only collector’s editions me and my brother had invested in and they were not as enjoyable as we had anticipated. Sure not every Collector’s Editions out there is a huge rip-off as those mentioned above but take this as a warning. As the next time you’re thinking of purchasing a Collector’s Edition of a game make sure the read a couple online reviews on it first. You don’t want to end up like my brother and I do you?
